As part of the topic Environmental Science, Grade 10 Learners carry out ecology projects in the Grahamstown Botanical Gardens. In groups of two, they map and monitor plots in the gardens over a period of 8 -10 weeks. Learners have to identify plant and animal species occurring in their plot and analyse the soil. They also learn about water quality assessment. Each groups findings are compiled in a report where they must try to construct food chains and webs from their data.
The Project allows learners to engage with ecological theory and methodology through hands on experience, broaden their natural history knowledge and enjoy themsleves at the same time. The teachers quite enjoy it too! :-)
