Computerlabs catching dust being closed for ages - quite a sad scene!
The third term has finally started and
it was time to seek new schools to join awareNet,one of them was
Ntaba Maria a school situated on Raglan Road schooling learners up to
Grade 9.Very excited to meet my new group of Ntaba Maria learners I
was saddened to learn from the Principle that the Computer lab wasnât
functioning for the last couple of months due to a huge power outing
which caused damaged to most of the computers. It was quite a
saddening site to know that this lab has been closed for most of
last year and this year not functioning at all and was standing there
collecting dust.
To think that if these computers were
fixed sooner a lot of good things couldâve been taught to the
learners and they also couldve used the computers for research and
educational learning.awareNet was tautght in the computerlab two
years ago and ever since then the lab has been closed and has just
collected dust. When meeting with Mr. Scheepers the principle of
Ntaba Maria telling him we want to bring awareNet back to his school
he was very pleased and said he will arrange for someone to come and
see what should be done to repair the computers.
I gave the whole situation a week and
then contacted Mr Scheepers again about an update on the computer lab
situation,I was pleased to learn that he would get insurance to pay
for the repairs and it would probably be up and running within the
next two weeks. In the meantime we started our awareNet sessions
working on my laptop dividing the learners all into little groups
with only one learner doing all the typing on the laptop. Its been
three weeks since starting with the Ntaba Maria awareNet group and
tomorrow(20/08/2012) we will be fully functioning in the Computer Lab
each learner working on their own computer doing their profiles for
the first time!
Another schools whoâs computer lab
has been closed for a couple of months has been Nathaniel Nayuluza
Secondary School. They were up and running a couple of months ago but
sadly they lost the use of their lab and it was non functioning up
until about three weeks ago. Pressure was put on them to dust of the
cobwebs on the computers and get things up and running in the lab. I
can say with great pleasure that this Lab is functioning again!
