Peace Day Concert 2013
Yesterday, on 18th of September 2013
awarenet celebrated a Peace Concert in the Extension 9 Hall in Joza. It was
wonderful to see, how the students in an age of 13 – 15 performed their
autographic Hip Hop songs about Peace.
Corinne Cooper
of the Rhodes University Dept of Music and Musicology,
along with Sean Devonport and Tsukudu Moroeng, students of Sound Technology
composed the track for the peace song. Seven weeks before the concert the
learners were trained by Lunga Heleni and Zukani Budaza from Sonic Art Studio
assisted by Corinne Cooper.
The judge evaluated the performance of five local schools from Grahamstown in
six categories. One of the judges was the hiphop artist and composer Tsukudu
Moroeng who performed also his own song at the end of the competition.
Furthermore the judges included Sebastian Jameson - a composer and the Top 20
at the Coca Cola Popstars – and the master student in
ethomusic cology, Nicole Germiquet.
The MC’s Sanele Ntshingana and Neo Koza introduced the concert together
with one of the special guest - the local kwaito artist, Syanda. The next items
in the process of the concert were the performances of the schools. To be fair
was the order of the school performances drawn by lot. The Competition was
followed by a spontaneous dance performance from one student of the CM Vellem
HPS, the moderators and some people from the audience.
The awarenet celebration was successfully completed by the award presentation.
The winner of the awarenet peace concert, the Ntaba Maria School with the best
peace day song won a professional music video for their own song, but the other
schools needn’t to be said: Corinne Cooper will record and produce the cds at
the department's recording studio for all of the performed peace day songs.
Furthermore the judge chose the best male rapper, Azola Jela from Nyaluza SS
and the best female rapper, Asiphile Vena from Good Shepherd PS. The
certificates for the best Peace Day Perfomance went to CM Vellem HPS and for
the best peace day song lyrics to Nyaluza SS. In addition the Mary Waters HS
won the prize for the best overall performance by an individual.
In summary the whole concert was a really successful
celebration with many talented students.
