Our kids do not know their African language because most of them grew up in areas with mixed cultures. You will find out even on TV, the presenters mixing their African language with English when they are running a programme instead of sticking to their language. The programmes such as Takalani Sesame are also done in English. You will find out that our children translate the soapies ion TV such as ''the bold and the beautiful" and "days of our lives'' but they do not know their own language.

What can we do about this?

What can we do about this?

The youth of today do not want their languges and I become worried when I see them because they will not learn other languages while they are unable to know what is going on about their mother tongue languages and they bring problems to our teachers because they are not aware about their language because they are not interested. My fear is that where are you going to work if do not know other languages more especially your home language and maybe it is because they are bored of being thought isiXhosa because they have the tendency of saying they knew everything although they do not.

The aim of my project is to convince those who need to be convinced. I would like to tell them that we should be proud of who we are because it is the way of building the self confident and if we are confident about our languages who can destroy the confident we have? Those who are not interested in their languages are strugling even in reading because they are not exposed on it.

In order for us to be good&perfect in everything we need to be exposed to everything in life so that we can cope!

I am very worried about our learners who are unable to read and write, my worry comes up when mother tounge is lost in our country. If we could engage ourselves as educators in language of teaching and learning be our mother tongue I think learners will do better starting from grade R-3. Educators are able to engage themselves in any change and when the child has not yet acquired his mother tongue, it is easily to them to capture any thing being thought. I also know for the fact that English is a gate way language for us all and an international language as cited by the past minister of education Proffessor Kader Asmal stated that.
