Grahamstown residents have stood up and fought against the Eastern Cape government that proposed to move the Grahamstown high court to Bisho. More than 10 000 petitions were signed and the consesus was reached that it should remain in Grahamstown. Some of the people who contributed in saving the high court include Dr Sizwe Mabizela, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Rhodes University. He and the media adressed the possible negative repercussions of this movement. He and others made their voices heard and they are confident that there will be no future intentions of moving the high court from Grahamstown as they had the power to change the mind of the government.

Rhodes University, the High court and some other government departments in Grahamstown are the only sources of Employment in this city as Grahamstown is very tiny. With the removal of the High court from Grahamstown, many Grahamstown residents would remain unemployed and Rhodes University is incapable of employing each and every individual in Grahamstown. Instead of taking some government departments and other sources of Employment away, they should just build more instead in order to fight poverty in Grahamstown.
