Agricultural Science is one of the important learning areas in South African schools. At Thembalabantu High School, we started a programme of dealing with the theory part of Agricultural Science in class and the practical part in the garden.

It is a known fact that if a person does things practically, it would be difficult to forget.

We targeted the grade 10 Agricultural science class. It was nice to see a number of girl interested in the project. Their presence was applauded by community members who also help us with the project.

We decided that the produce would be sold to members of the community and the rest will taken home by the learners. The aim of the garden project is to prepare learners to be able to produce here at school and at their respective homes.

The long term aim is motivating them to continue with Agriculture at university level and to become black commercial farmers or managers of farms.

The School Governing Body(SGB) was very supportive when we informed them about the garden project. They provided the following:

- implements e.g. spades, rakes, folk spades and hoes

- vegetable seeds

- fence

We decided to work on the project during Agricultural Science periods because some learners live far away from school, and rely on contract transportation paid for by their parents.

The learners decided that during the holidays and weekends they would take turns watering the plots. The members of the community would keep to make sure that the produce is no stolen by thieves. The learners have promised us that they will see the project through to its conclusion.
