Bafazi JSS is a school at which history is unfolding. Many people think that this school was built by the community but it was a school built by donors from the USA (Bill Venter Foundation) through the Nelson Mandela Foundation. One of the main aims of this programme was to eradicate mud schools built by former apartheid government. But additionally, it was a programme to fulfill the promises of Nelson Mandela to the communities he visited during his Presidency.

A plaque in the Principal's office testifies that the school was "officially dedicated on 8 October 2001 by Mr. Nelson Mandela and funded by the Bill Venter Foundation". However, Mr. Mandela never made the dedication as bad weather prevented his helicopter from leaving his home at Qunu, not far away. This is reported by Mlamli Sandile who was there at the event. The plaque has since been mounted on the walls.

In the image below, SELF is installing 2kW of solar panels - a sizeable investment in the school indeed.
