Mary Waters High School (South Africa)

Mary Waters Hoer Skool (affectionately known as MAWAS – an acronym of the school’s name) is a Grade 8 to Grade 12 secondary school in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa. It is situated in an area called Lavender Valley near a settlement known as Ver Genoeg.

When it was founded by Rhodes University Education Department as Rhodes Practicing School, it was the first junior secondary school in the Albany Road area. It was meant to provide workplace experience for both lecturers and students.

It became a high school in 1963 and took its current name from its first principal, Miss Mary Waters who was considered a fierce, eccentric and formidable woman. She was a teacher, mentor, poet and playwright.
The school is involved in extra-mural activities such as rugby, soccer, volleyball, netball, athletics, music, dance, etc. It has as academic subjects: Afrikaans, English, isiXhosa, Geography, History, Biology, Physical Science, Social Science, Art, Commerce, Technology, etc.

Mary Waters is a high School in Grahamstown. The Mary Waters Lab installation is complete and the lab is currently in use.

Several Rhodes Depts are involved with ICT at the school: The Education Dept at Rhodes and the CoE are currently engaged there.
