Animals on the move a Science Project
In this project on the move we are investigating how different animals move and how they differ from each other when they move.
REPTILES
TODAY WE WERE VISITED BY MR BASIL MILLS, HE KNOWS SNAKES VERY WELL
AND H WAS TAUGHT BY HIS FATHER WHEN HE WAS AT CHILD-HOOD ON HOW TO
HANDLE SNAKES.HE TOLD US ABOUT THE DIFFERENT SNAKES IN THE WORLD AND HE
SAID ABOUT 100 SNAKES ARE IN TE WORLD TRAVELLING TO FIND FOOD &
ONLY ABOUT 13 SNAKES ARE DANGEROUS TO PEOPLE. HE SHOWED US A ALBINO
PYTHON THAT IS YELLOWISH AND THAT YOU MUST NOT HOLD IT FOR LONGER THAN
TEN MINUTES OTHERWISE IT WILL STRIKEby:Siyabulela Mali MY LESSON WITH SNAKES
WE HAVE MR BASIL MILLS TO TALK TO US ABOUT SNAKES HOW DANGEROUS
SNAKES ARE THE IS A SNAKE CALLED ADDER IF ITS BITES YOU,YOU CANT COVER
IT WITH CLOTH
YOUR WILL BLAS LIKE A SOCCER BALL AND ALSO YOU CANT SCREAM IF YOU SEE A SNAKE YOU SHOULD BE CALM By:Ayanda Sergeant ALL ABOUT REPTILES.... Today We Got To Meet A Very Well Known Guest MR
BASIL MILLS He Came To Warn And Educate Us About Snakes Very Different
Kind Of Snakes E.g If You Dont Know Any Kind Of Snakes Im Going To
Educate You On What Ive Been Educated On Well There Are Many Type Of
snakes You Get Pythons,Cobra,Adder, boomlag These Snakes Consist Of More
Then 130 Teeth And Have Long Lungs Now If Ever You Are In A situation
Whereby You See A snake All By Yourself Well Heres A Tip To You LADIES
cause Im Sure That Guys Dont Scream So If You See It Dont Scream Just
Slowly Walk Away Without Hesitating Or Panicing Please Do Contact Mr
Basil Mills ... Heres Another Thing If You Have Any Neighbours Keeping
Snakes,Tortise,Lizards Or You Are Keeping THEM Without Permission STOP
you Can Get Arrested By:Siphosethu Mgwelo snakes
today we were visited by mr Basil Mills,he came to talk about snakes
and how dangerous they are.He told us that a python snake is a very
dangerous snake, when it bites you,you should not put a bandage because
it can be very dangerous for your body and when a cobra snakes split on
your eyes you should wash them with clean water.after that he showed us a
big snake called albino python,it was a very beautiful snake.we also
learned about how we should react when we see a snake. By: Zimbasa Mpelo TOPIC ABOUT REPTILES
TODAY WE HAVE LEARNT ABOUT REPTILES.THERE ARE 4 TYPES OF SNAKES
WHICH ARE :ADDER,MABBER,COBRA. THESE TYPES OF REPTILES ARE VERY
DANGEROUS .THE WORST ONE IS ADDER COZ WHEN YOU ARE BEING EATEN BY THIS
TYPE OF SNAKE YOU SHOULD STAY STILL,DONT MOVE AND YOU MUST NOT COVER
THAT PLACE WHERE YOU HAVE BEEN EATEN BY THE SNAKE CALLED ADDER.
THESE SNAKES ARE FOUND IN THE BUSHES AND THEY LIKE TO STAY IN A NICE
WARM PLACE.SOME OF THEM CAN NOT HERE PEOPLE BUT CAN HEAR MOVEMENTS
THAT HAPPEN AROUND THEM. By:Lihle Njokweni SNAKES ARE VERY INTERESTING BUT ALSO DANGEROUS
TODAY WE LEARNED ABOUT DIFFERENT SNAKES AND SOME REPTILES.MR BASIL
MILLS VISITED US AND TALKED ABOUT HOW SNAKES ARE DANGEROUS,WHAT I FOUND
VERY SHOCKING WAS THAT SNAKES ARE VERY VERY SCARED OF HUMAN BEINGS AS
THEY THINK THAT HUMANS WILL ATTACK THEM WITH OUT A REASON [WITCH IM SURE
OF THAT SOME PEOPLE DO THAT AS THEY WILL BE IN PRESSSURE].IF EVER
SOMEONE IS BEATEN BY AN ADDER YOU MUST NOT PUT A BANDAGE ON THE AREA
WHERE THE ADDER ATE YOU.IF EVER YOU SEE A SNAKE JUST STAY CALM AND TRY
TO GET AWAY RFOM THE SNAKE AND CALL AN ADULT TO HELP YOU.ALWAYS STAY
ALERT.

Today i learnt about snakes it was amazing to learn about them they
are very dangerous animals.Mr BASIL MILLS showed us his python and it is
very very scary and big, today i saw a python for the first time today
and it is very long and it is a male,it has a big stomach and big lungs
and it is called the albino python.By:Hlumile Hlasela
WILD ANIMALS LESSON WITH MR MILLS
What a fun lesson we had at the awarenet class of Ntaba maria with mr
Basil Mills. he was actually teaching us about snakes. it was a very
cool interesting lesson because i got to learn more about snakes almost
for the third time now. we learnt about how snakes bite, where they live
meaning their (habitat) we learnt about their front teeth, their skin,
what they eat, how they eat. we also saw the actual snake which it's
colour is yellow,it's a very nice snakes its very interesting and cool
as well. it was a very nice lesson i really enjoyed it. we learnt about
pythons, boomslangs, mambas, puff adders, cobras and vine snakes as well. we
learnt how you should treat yourself when you get bitten by a snake.
you should call people to help you, sometimes when you hear a snake sound
its actually warning you to stay away from it it's an alert because
it's dangerous or harmful. snakes are very nice snakes but can be
extremely dangerous. we've got many types of snakes e.g egg eaters, live
meat eaters, dead meat eaters e.t.c. egg eaters don't have teeth so what
they do is, they crush your bones and lead you to death. By:Siphokuhle Tata ON THE 18th OF FEBRUARY WE WERE VISITED BY MR BASIL MILLS.
HE TOLD US ABOUT HOW DANGEROUS SNAKES ARE AND HOW THEY SURVIVE IN THE WILD.
HE TOLD US HOW AN ADDER HUNTS AND HOW IT SEEKS HIS PREY,HE ALSO TOLD
US HOW THE CAPE COBRA DEFENDS ITSELF WHEN IT SENSES DANGER AND HOW IT
SPRAYS THE VENOM.
MR BASIL MILLS ALSO TOLD US WHAT WE ARE SUPPOSE TO DO WHEN WE SEE A SNAKE AND HOW WE MUST REACT FOR THE SNAKE NOT TO HARM US.
MR BASIL MILLS CAME WITH AN ALBINIAN PYTHON WHICH HAD A WHITE AND YELLOW SKIN.THE SNAKE WAS HUGE AND LONG.
TODAY I HAVE LEARNT THAT SNAKES ARE VERY SCARED OF PEOPLE AND THEY HAVE MANY ENEMIES.By:Linolonwabo Makana
SNAKES CHAT
Today on 18 of february, we talked about snakes with mr
mills. It was a very interesting talk with him, he told us the types of
snakes in the world and the different species of animals.I was really
interested in seeing the snakes because growing up, I was always curious
of snakes and also scared of them. The snake we saw was a python, It was
really sweet, not harmful, It was very nice and quiet.I have learnt
alot about snake and I'm even interested to get in the snake business,
because It's so interesting and full af action. Some of the snakes I'm
scared of are the mamba, the cobra and the rattle snake. By:Ziphelele Losi LESSON ON SNAKES
THE LESSON ON SNAKES WAS INTERESTING.MR BASIL TAUGHT US HOW TO BE
ALERT ON SNAKES HOW TO PROTECT OURSELVES FROM THE SNAKES.AND IN THE
LESSON HE TOLD US ABOUT DIFFERENT TYPES OF SNAKES AND THEIR
ADAPTATIONS.THE MOST DANGEROUS SNAKE IS THE PYTHON.HE TOLD US THAT THE
SNAKES HAVE DIFFERENT KINDS OF TEETH WHICH ARE CALLED THE SOLID
TEETH,BACKNECK TEETH,FRONT TEETH.IF SOMEONE SEE A SNAKE THEY MUST NOT BE
FRIGHTENED OR SCREAM MAKE SOUND BE EMOTIONAL OR MOVE A LOT.WHEN YOU SEE
A SNAKE THE ONLY THING YOU CAN DO IS TO CONTACT THE FIRE
BRIGATORS.SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN KEEPING SNAKES MUST HAVE A PERMIT
AND KEEPING SNAKES COST FORTUNE OF MONEY.IF SOMEONE IS BITEN BY A SNAKE
THE MUST NOT MOVE.IF YOU SEE A SNAKE NEAR BY DONT RUN JUST STAND STILL
AND THE SNAKE WILL PASS YOU.THE SNAKE CAN SENSE FEAR OF A PERSON AND IT
CAN STRICK YOU. PEOPLE MUST BE SAFE AND PEOPLE MUST NOT JUST KILL
SNAKES BECAUSE THEY CAN BE FINED. By:Luthando Ncokotwane reptiles
Basil Mills came to us to talk about snakes,he told us that snakes
are dangerous and are part of the wildlife,he told us about differnt
kinds of snakes eg python, adder, black and green mamba.Hesaid in order to
take car of snakes you have to train for 30 fulls years and that we was
traind by his father.he said that snakes are culprits that thjey may
sometimes pretend to be sleeping although they are awake. He said that
when we see a snake, totoise, allegator or any other reptile we should
call him or the fire fighters because he works with them,He showed us a
beautiful snake and he told us that alot of people would die to have
that skin snakes for their handbag............he thought us alot about
snakes and that we should be careful. By:Wamkelwe Bontsi

Animal
Alligator
An
alligator is an animal which is like a crocodile. Alligators have a
rough skin, weird eyes that are really creepy to look at and it can
move on land and on water it can stay in water. Alligators give birth
approximately about 5 babies per female and they mate differently.
The alligators are really dangerous animals to keep so you will have
to ask for permits for you to keep one and your place must have ponds
and dams so it costs large sums of money. Alligators have 4 legs and
a long tale and they are meat eaters. Their type of food is fish.
Alligators move fast and it can not stay in one place it likes to
move in one place to another. Alligators have that rough skin to
protect it self from the predators. Alligators bites re really toxic
and you must take immediate action and go to hospital.

CHOSEN THIS ANIMAL BECAUSE I LIKE IT,IT CARES ABOUT ITS OWN
BABIES.THIS ANIMAL IS FOUND IN THE BUSHES AND IT EATS BANANAS.YHIS
ANIMAL IS MOST IN THE BUSHES FOUND IN THE TREES. IT LOOKS LIKE A
PERSON IT HAS LEGS AND HANDS IT MOVES SLOWLY SOME TIMES AND SOME
TIMES IT MOVES VERY FAST.IT IS VERY TINY BUT IT CAN RUN VERY FAST
WHEN YOU ARE CHASING IT.IT IS BROWN IN SKIN COLOURAND IT HAS BLACK
EYES.

PANDA BEAR
Panda
bears are beautiful black and white bears that live in cold and icy
places in the ANTLENTIC OCEAN. Pandas are very fast animals but you
wouldn’t notice that when you see it running .These kind of bears
eat fish only .Panda bears like attacking unwanted animals or people
around their places .The most funny thing about panda bears they
fight like people and they can even swim.

THE
ANIMAL THAT I HAVE ABOUT TWO CHOSEN TO WRITE ABOUT IS THE DIFFERENT
SNAKES IN THE WORLD; in the world there are many types of snakes we
have. THESE SNAKES ARE FOUND IN PLACES WERE THERE IS WARM SHADES AND
IN BRUSHES IN YARDS WERE IT IS NOT NOSY.SNAKES MOVE INDIFFERENT
PLACES WERE THEY COULD HUNTFOOD THEMSELVES.SNAKES VERY DANGEROUS TO
ANY-PERSON WHO BUSY MAKES NOISE AROUND THEM.

THE ANIMAL
THAT I LOVE AND LEARN
The
animal I would like to learn of is gaboon viper a snake that is
dangerous of them all. The gaboon snake has a head like an arrow,
it`s sharp in front and it takes time for the place where it had
bite a person
The
gaboon viper can stay for a long time with out food and water at the
place where it goes and where it stays. This snake can move 90 km/h
that means faster than a human being. This snake eats raw meat and
alive and not dead meat.

My
favorite animal is a dog, I like dogs because some of them help
people who cant msee [blind people],they take care of these people.
Dogs are very good to have them at your home. They protect us, they
bark a lot when there is someone they don’t know. It is very fun
playing with them because they like playing and they move very fast.
Mostly I like pat dogs; they are very cute and easy to hold. dogs are
very dangerous they can bite you and when they do you should go to
the clinic and have an injection so that you cannot get the disease
of a dog and when it barks at you don’t run just stand or walk away
as if you don’t see it because if you run it can catch and bite you

Common
Iguana
I chose this animal because, I
like the colors of its skin. I am afraid of reptiles but this one
really got me, it’s such a charming animal with its long tail and
soft skin. This animal is a carnivore because it eats meaty foods,
such as flies, and mosquitoes. It commonly stays in a tree branch and
moves from one place to another very quickly and swiftly. It’s
green and has black and red stripes above and yellow and black
stripes below. This reptile is an amphibian because it lives both on
land and in water.

HOW DO BIRDS WINGS ALLOW THE BIRD TO FLY?
THERE ARE ALMOST AS MANY WAYS OF FLYING AS THERE ARE KINDS OF BIRDS.ALBATROSSESGLIDE AND SOAR WITH LONG NARROW WINGS STRETCHED OUT,SOMETIMES STAYING ALOFT FOR HOURS WITHOUT A SINGLE WING BEAT.HUMMING BIRDS , ON THE OTHER HAND , CAN'T REST THEIR WINGS FOR EVEN A SECOND IN FLIGHT. WOODPECKERSHAVE A SWOOPING FLIGHT, CROWS FLY IN A STRAIGHT LINE, AND SWALLOWS DART AND WEAVE EVERY WHICH WAY.
DESIGNED FOR FLIGHT
BIRD WINGS ARE NOT THE ONLY PART OF THEIR BODIES DESIGNED FOR FLIGHT. JUST ABOUT EVERY PART OF A BIRD BODY IS SPECIALLYADAPTED TO HELP THE BIRD FLY.A BIRD'S "CENTRE OF GRAVITY" IS THE BALANCE POINT BETWEEN ITS TWO WINGS AND BETWEEN ITS HEAD AND TAIL.
TAKING OFF!!!!!
WE HUMANS COULD TRY LEAPING AND FLAPPING OUR ARMS, OR RUNNING INTO A STIFF WIND, BUT WE WOULD'NT GET VERY FAR OFF THE GROUND! THE REASON BIRDSCAN IS BECAUSE OF THE SPECIAL SHAPE OF THEIR WINGS .THE BONES OF A BIRD'S WINGS ARE IN FRONT, COVERED WITH A SMOOTH LAYER OF FEATHERS THAT TAPER TOWARDS THE BACK.THE BACK OF THE WING IS JUST A SINGLE LAYER OF FLIGHT FEATHERS.WHEN AIR COMES STRAIGHT TOWARDS AN AIRFOIL THE SPECIAL CAUSES THE AIR TO FLOW FASTER ON TOP OF THE WING THAN UNDER IT.

How Do Dogs Move around
Dogs are very agile and graceful animals.Dogs move in different ways. Some dogs would waggle when they walk.Others wuuld seem to be in such a hurry while another breed would seem to be always strolling in the park.A Greyhound would run at full speed while a Bulldog encumbered by a heavy body will have a slow gait.Terriers and Poodles always provide amusements thus they are always seen tumbling around.A dog would run, gallop, trot, sprint or aimlessy amble around.Walking is a dog thing.A dog's walk is termed as diagonal walk simply because diagonal lrgs are simultaneously moving in the same direction.Right foreleg and left hind leg will move at the same time going to the same direction. This will be followed by the simultaneous movement of the left foreleg and the right hind leg.

HOW SNAKES MOVE
SNAKES HAVE DIFFERENT FOUR WAYS OF MOVING. SINCE SNAKES DONT HAVE LEGS THEY USE THEIR MUSCLES AND SCALES TO HELP THEM DO THE 'walking'.
SERPENTINE METHOD: THEY MOVE IN A WAVY MOTION.THEY WILL PUSH OFF OF ANY BUMP OR OTHER SURFACE LIKE ROCKS,TREES ETC.THIS MOVEMENT IS ALSO KNOWN AS LATERAL UNDULATION.
CONCERTINA METHOD:THIS IS A MORE DIFFICULT WAY FOR SNAKES TO MOVE BUT IS EFFECTIVE IN TIGHT SPACES.THE SNAKE BRACES THE BACK PORTION OF THEIR BODY WHILE PUSHING AND EXTENDING THE FRONT PORTION.
SIDEWINDING:THE SNAKE APPERS TO THROW ITS HEAD FORWARD AND THE REST OF ITS BODY FOLLOWS WHILE THE HEAD IS THROWN FORWARD AGAIN.THIS IS ALSO A DIFFICULT MOTION TO DESCRIBE BUT ITS OFTEN USED BY SNAKES TO MOVE ON LOOSE OR SLIPPERY SURFACES.
RECTILINEAR:THE SNAKE USES SOME OF THE WIDE SCALES ON ITS BELLY TO GRIP THE GROUND WHILE PUSHING FORWARD WITH THE OTHERS.
HOW DO THEY MOVE?
MOST SNAKES MOVE BY COILING THEIR BODIES INTO A SERIES OF S-SHAPEP LOOPS.SOME LARGE SNAKES,LIKE BOAS,MOVE IN A WAY SIMILARTO A CATERPILLAR.SNAKES THAT LIVE IN THE DESERT HAVE A HARDER TIME GETTING THE TRACTION NECESSARY MOVEMENT. THESE SNAKES ARE CALLED SIDEWINDERS,MOVE IN A SIDEWAYS MOTION THAT ALLOWS THEM TO SLITHER ALONG ON THE EVER-SHIFTING SURFACE.

All dog breeds have different ways of moving but all dogs walk.Walking is a dog thing the walk and trot entail the same leg movements.the trot m faster movement though would be

Snakes have four ways of moving around .Since they dont have legs they use their muscles and their scales to do the walking.Sepentine method; This motion is what most people think of when they think of snakes .Snakes will push off any bump or other surface, rocks trees e.t.c to get going .They move in a wavy motion. They would not be able to move over slick surfaces like glass at all. This movement is also known as lateral undulation.
This is a more difficult way for the snake to move but is effectively in tight spaces the snakes braces the back portion of their body while pushing and extending the front portion .Then the snakes drops the front portion of their body and straightens an pulls the back portion along. It is almost like they through themselves forward.

SNAKES
snakes move in many different ways since they don't have legs they use their muscles and their scales to walk.
snakes have no arms and legs as well, but they swift through grass, sand and in some cases they can move through water.snakes can easily climb trees.
they usually rely on the grounds rough surface to provide resistance, something for them to push against that is not slippery.
most snakes move by coiling their bodies into a series of s-shaped loops, which each loop pushing against the other like boas. snakes move in a way similar to a catapiller ,inching along the ground. snakes that live in desert have a harder time getting the traction necessary for movement. these snakes, called sidewinders, move in sideways motion that allows them to slither along on the ever-shifting sandy surface.
snakes have certain advantages thanks to the unique bodies.not only they can move quickly and easily over and through a variety of landscapes they can also move in near silence ,making it easy for them to sneak up on their prey, and their narrow, flexible bodies allow them to fit into small crevices and holes where they can wait for unsuspecting animals to come along. or where they can hide from predators.

HOW DO BIRDS MOVE
There are almost as many ways of flying as there are kinds of birds.Albastrosses glide and soar with long narrow wings stretched out, sometimes staying aloft for hours without a single wing beat.
FACTS ABOUT BIRDS
Birds don't have teeth or nose.
Their tail and wing bones are very short.
Bird lungs don't fill up with alot of air, like ours do.
DESIGNED FOR FLIGHT
Bird wings are not hte only part of their bodies designed for flight.Just about every part of a bird body is specially adapted to help a bid fly.A bird's center of gravity is the balance point between Its two wings and between Its head and tail.
GETTING UP IN THE AIR
Birds have many different ways of taking off.some, like loons run into the wind, and the rush of air beneath their wings lifts them up.

HOW DO SNAILS MOVE
The word snail is loosely used for almost all members of molluscan class which coiled shells in the adult stage.most snails move by gliding long on their muscular foot, which is lubricated with mucus.
snails are quit slow ,but they always get to wear they need to go,they have what is considered to be a flat foot beneath their body.there are muscles in this foot begin to expand and contract.by doing this there is a movement that actually pushes the snail along on their journey.the mucus that is secreted provides protection for the snails if they happen to be walking on dangerously pointy things.

How do dogs move?Dogs are very agile and graceful. The nimble lithe movement of a dog being paraded in a show ring would never fail to draw out a lot of oohs and aahs from spectators who are watching. A dog that is hunting and following a trail will walk slowly. The walk will turn into a run as the dog scents the quarry.Police dogs can smell drugs from a person that is carring them. Some dogs can scence evile spirits that come in a certain home. Some people say there are dogs that are disable .Dogs come in a different size and different lengths and weights like pit bulls and normal dog that people know and stay with. I love dogs as I love my parents. .

HOW WINGS ALLOW BIRDS TO FLY
A bird has many types of its wings. It has eleven layers of feathers in its wings. To fly well, birds must have most of their wieght in their center of gravity, and very little weight in front of or behind it. Birds have many different ways of taking off. Some birds run into the wind and rush of air beneath their wings lifts them up.Others jump of cliffs and other high perches. For example CHIMNY SWIFTS simply let go of their chimney perch and fall into the air. Some birds can just go straight up with perched position without jumping

The word snail is usely used for almost all members of the molluscan class GASTROPODA which have coiled shells in the udult stage. Most snails move by gliding along on their muscular foot, which is lubricated with mucus.
snails moveat a proverbially low speed.they produce mucus in orderto aid locomotion by reducing friction, and the mucus also helpsreducethe snails riskof mechanicalinjury from sharp objects.
snails move in a gliding way, powered by contracting many muscles.as it contract its muscle slime is produced which allows the snailto glide on surfaces.

snails are not the fastest creature on earth.you can set a snail at the end of your driveway and take a 12 hour nap by the time it reaches the end.they have been ''clocked' at a speed of 008 miles and hour. snails crawl on glass of a window or aquarium.they reduce friction.those snails which do not have a shell,or only a very small shell are usually called slugs

HOW FISH SWIM
Fishe swim to breath, eat and move in the water.Fish muscles look like sideways W's called MYOMERES.The muscles contract from side and front to back. The fishes body pushes againts the ware and moves the fish forward.Fins help fine tune swimming. The caudal fin,or tail fin, increases speed.
The pectoral and pelvic fins steer up or down. They also help fish turn and stop. The dorsal fin and anal fin upright in the water-as the keel on the bottom of a sail boat keeps it upright.
Fish tales
The caudal,or tail fins adds an extra forward kick to the fishes swimming.Tail shapes vary depending on how the fishes swims or where it lives.Crescent shaped tails sare for swiming fast for long distances.Lake sturgeon forked shape tails are also suited for fast swimming, but they are helpful in making turns.
Yellow bullhead catfish rounded tails are bulit for swimming slowly.Fish swim using their muscles, tail, fins and body shape.Body shapes vary depending on ow fish swim or where they live, understanding this idea.
