eLearning Africa Photo Competition
This year, we want to submit our favorite photos again to the eLearning Africa Conference Photo Competition. Last year, one of our photos made it into the second round, so we got pretty close to winning, which motivates us to try it again this year.
The VSA invites all awareNet users to take part and send us photos and descriptions about how technology has changed your life.
The eLearning Africa Photo Competition The 3rd annual eLearning Africa Photo Competition is now underway! This year’s theme is:
The African Century: ICTs Inspiring Innovation ICTs are increasingly present in everyday African life, enhancing the way we live, learn, cooperate and connect. How have ICTs inspired you? How is technology fostering innovation in individuals and communities in Africa? Let us see this through your eyes! Share your pictures and send us a brief description outlining the inspiration behind your idea.
The winners will be selected by a jury, and the prizes for the top 3 photos are:
1st prize: Canon PowerShot S95 Digital Camera
2nd prize: Sony DCR-SX45EB SD Camcorder

VGHS learners have not only completed research projects about plant fossils, kaolin mining and the physics of musical instruments - they have also presented their finding to CM Vellem HPS personally and now at SciFest to learners from all over the Eastern Cape.
Today, they inspired visitors to record their own video which was then straight away uploaded to awareNet. Everyone was excited to see the results on awareNet immediately!
Their teachers, Sarah Hanton and Boudina McConnachie, entered for the Microsoft Innovative Teacher Awards by the Partners in Learning Forum and made it into the Finals. They will presenting this project among 20 other finalists in Durban on the 2/4/12. - Obviously, not only the teachers were inspired by awareNet's technology and possibilities, but also the judges of the Partners in Learning Competition!
We are holding our thumbs!

Photos were meant to describe the following: ‘ICTs are increasingly
present in everyday African life, enhancing the way we live, learn,

description outlining the inspiration behind your idea.’
So, we submitted this picture with the following description:
‘Helping learners to think “out of the Box”! Here, learners at Mary
Waters High School in the Grahamstown township expand their horizons in a
fun educational project, in which they develop an innovative board game
explaining social networking and the Internet to other learners who do
not have access. The objective is to use technology to teach new ways of
thinking out of the box about common things like board games.’

Caption: awareNet's mobile prototype being viewed by a learner on tablet. Here a learner at a school without a computer lab can quickly access educational content on awareNet (coming soon Siyavula's Open Textbooks) from a mobile device. With dropping smart phone prices and the learners' affinity for these instruments, awareNet will be able to bring content to thousands of rural schools in South Africa.
