Teacher shortage at school

Dear sir/madam

Here in Grahamstown we problem of not having enough teachers in most schools. There are subject that we don't write during this time of the year.June exams are around the corner but there are still books that hasn't written, there is no teacher the subject.

You all say that you want future doctors, scientists of tomorow but you don't employ teachers. We can't learn without them and expect the rate of Eastern Cape is going to increase.

I wish that the minister of education can employ more teachers so that studies can carry on.And fix this mess that is going to kill the future South Africans.

C.M. VELLEM H. P.SCHOOL

PO BOX 937

GRAHAMSTOWN

28 FEBRUARY 2013

Dear Minister of education

CONCERNS AND IMPACT OF TEACHER SHORTAGE

As you are aware of teacher shortage I need to bring to your attention how it affects us as educators. I’m sure you are aware that we are dealing with learners that have learning barriers, which need a lot of special individual attention. Such learners cannot perform at the same pace as other learners. This becomes very tricky for a teacher as we have to deal with different levels in one class, with large numbers. As a result we are unable to do justice to the learners. We don’t assess them as we should and we are unable to help them master the necessary skills as we should. To teach and be a remedial teacher at the same time is not easy.

Learners don’t get the necessary skills easily, especially with schools in the township where there is a lot of illiteracy. Learners are solely dependent on teachers for everything. (School work). Monitoring their work takes too much time and a teacher is unable to reach every learner in the class as we wish. Even moving around the classroom full of desks and learners is a problem.

I humbly request that the honourable minister help us in this regard because it dampens the spirit of teachers, and takes away the dignity and confidence of the educator to the job efficiently and effectively.

I hope this letter will receive the attention it deserves

Thank you

Yours in education

N.G. Frans

Awarenet anti-littering kids visit Rhodes- Africa Media Matrix

On the 28th of April, Sunday- a group of 7 learners from Marry Waters High School who are currently doing the "Anti-littering campaign" went to Rhodes University Journalism Department to record an Anti-littering campaign awareness audio clip.

All the 7 hip, fresh and enthusiastic Awarenet learners participated in the recording of the audio clip which will be used for anti-littering awaress. These learners were so excited and they jumped around the Africa Media Matrix studio facilities, full of joy as it was for many of them their first time to be engulfed by microphones in a recording studio.

With the constant practise of the two page anti-littering campaign drama script, the learners showed their perfection abilities as they fluently recorded the script without any hustles, their voices blending very well ending up producing a very good sound- this is plausible.

"It was very worthwhile to spend an hour with the enthusiastic learners on a Sunday than maybe sitting in my room watching a movie or something"

The audio clip will be embedded with “anti-littering awareness campaign” picture that will be taken on Wednesday, 01 May at the Kowie River by Marry Waters High school where Rhodes students in collaboration with Awarenet CM Vellem and Marry waters leaners will clean the local river for awareness to the local Grahamstown community.

awarenet Peace day concert a day to remember

After many weeks of hard work dedication and hours spent on preparing for the Third Peace day Concert the time finally arrived for the 5 school from in and around grahamstown to preform their own Peace days songs at the awarenet Peace day Concert. Very excited all the learners arrived at the concert venue smartly dressed in their schools uniforms chatting away about how they are going to move and sing on stage. Small groups of people started gathering in the hall sitting down looking around waiting anxiously for the concert to start. A very excited atmosphere filled the hall as the Mc went on stage to the start the concert. People were clapping as he entered the on stage in a very professional way he introduced himself to the audience he Introduce the judges and the schools partaking in the concert.

A little entertainment was given from a student group calling them selves Elastic,a very upper class rapping group that preformed. They got the audience singing and clapping along while the performance was on the going on.After a superb performance from Elastic it was now time for The different School groups to preform.Lots of the audience was filled with the family and friends of the learners preforming and they seemed very eager to see the hidden talents these kids consisted off. When the first group came on stage I was filled with pride and emotion knowing the hard work and dedication that went in preparing each and every one of the youngsters for this concert. They went on stage each and every learner from the different schools and sang and danced their hearts out.I knew that deep down inside of themselves they all wanted to win the competition with sincerity. After every performance the crowd would go wild screaming and clapping for their favourite group.

I think the judges has a very hard decision as to who should be the winners they thought every group was brilliant and took quite a while to decide on the overall winners of each category. After a long buzz they finally came to their decision.I must admit the proudest of principles came to support he learners Mr Radio from Khulitso he really took pride in each and everyone of them. Some of the teachers from Ntaba and C.M Vellem also came and gave their support towards their learners Preforming.Lots excitement all around as the winners where announcement.Kids went mad running on stage when they heard there schools names called out, happily they went on to collect there certificate. The Media Grocotts Mail was also there clicking away taking photos after the concert they were ask what they thought of the concert? They were very impressed by the way the kids preformed they way the sang and also Wow by the fact that all songs were written by the kids.

I think the concert was a great success........

AwareYet?

Rhodes University Journalism students presented their work at CM Vellem School this morning. The last few weeks they worked on their project “awareYet?” with CM Vellem learners from grade 9. It was an awesome presentation! After everybody got a snack and a drink from them they presented their video they made with all its interviews of the learners and teachers. They also handed out some pamphlets and printed posters with quotes from the learners. All I have to say is “Well done!” - It was fun and the learners really appreciated it! The learners also wrote a blog about their time and experiences with Rhodes students.

Jan and his friends where having a cup of a coffee his friend saw Luce in the Cafe club. He went to her and asked that she is working here and Luce said yes I work here. The next day the manager friend followed Luce when she was going to a Cafe room he asked her name Luce didn’t want to answer him but she answered him. And she said why you are asking me my name he said “because I want to know it”. He took her and raped her.I ended there.

I attended the grade 9 C.M Vellem farewell

Yesterday I Had the honour to be invited to the C.M Vellem Grade 9 farewell at the Makana Resort. The restaurant was decorated in beautiful colours resembling the colours of the school. The learners were smartly dressed in their uniforms and even the teachers looked goodin smart wear. All the learners were waiting outside nervously anticipating the grand entry walk into the hall. Two by two they walked into the hall where they introduced themselves in choir singing ,they entertained all with abit of choir singing before they took their seats. The MC lady introduced the program of proceedings where after the event was opened in prayer, all talking was done in Isixhosa. Mrs Vamva from the C.M Vellem board gave a motivational speech to the learners about leaving C.M Vellem and the life after leaving C.M Vellem . After a very motivational speech the learners once again entertained us with their Choir singing. I also had the honour of giving a speech about the Grade 9 t their dedication and work on awarenet.18 learners received certificates in dedication and attendance in sessions during the teaching of awarenet. Two of the learners Thanduxolo and Thanduwethu two very active awarenet users also received Merit awards in sport for Karate in participation and dedication. After all the excitement in speeches and hand overs it was time to eat. The meal consisted of Chicken, meat pieces, yellow rice, roast potatoes squash with peas and pumpkin a good meal served. After the meal I was also thank for all my work I did for the school and the learners. A very enjoyable event attended, looking for the 2015 of teaching awarenet at C.M Vellem School.

issues

Issues affecting teenagers

My issue is that teenagers must stop walking out side during the night because there are lot of robberies out there that they can rob them and ruin their life. Teenagers don’t want to stop it because it’s nice to them walking during the night they don’t know that there is no where you going to go if you keep drinking alcohol during a night time. I am suggesting that teenagers must focus on their studies if you don’t have education where you going to get job or things you willing to have in your life like house, cars, office there are lot of them that you can choose and one more thing if you don’t have education whose going to take care of you, give you all the things you want in your life, buy shoes for you but you drop out at school because of walking during the night, drinking some different alcohols, influencing other teenagers to do something seems like it’s wrong . If you keep going with that you will see how life could be without education. Come on guys let’s don’t waste this opportunity that we had given by taut nelson Mandela. Come on guys pleas.

issues affecting me dealing with them

ISSUES AFFECTING ME DEALING WITH THEM

The things that affect me very much

To see other kids quit school so early.

After they quit school they end up smoking drugs and they are doing all the wrong things, like stealing money. Those children’s always give other kids wrong influence.

When they have no money to buy drugs they steal it or sell the house furniture and then they end up in jail. So sometimes I try to convince them to go to school no matter what they smoke but they have to make sure that they education and then they can get a job, no stealing just work for a money.

2.ISSUE I SAW CHILDREN HI-JACKINGCARS AND ITOLD THEM GUYS STOP DOING THIS YOU WILL ANDERESTED LIFE INJAIL.

3.I WAS WARRIED ABOUT MY FRIEND WHEN HE TOLD ME THAT HE IS DROP OUT TO SCHOOL AND TOLD HIM THAT YOU WILL GET NOWERE WITHOUT EDUCATION IWAS TRYING TO FIND SOMEONE TO CONVINCE HIM I TOLD HIM THAT IAM YOUR FRIEND DONT DO THIS THING AND HE SAY YES IAM GOING TO SCHOOL TOMORW WHEN I FAIL AGAIN ITOLD DONT GIVE UP

issues that affect me and dealing with them

ISSUES AFFECTING ME AND DEALING WITH THEM

Issues that are affecting me are teenagers that are falling pregnant. And teens that are using drugs, and drop out at school. Most of teens are raping and robbing taking people’s wallet by force.

Most of teens they are in age of 19 or 16 but they drop out of school without a reason and girl getting to be prostitutes. Boy start to joining gang stars. Getting to be used to transport the drug or something else to many countries.

It affect me so painful because they will end up nowhere with there lives

My issues that effect me

my issues that affect me and dealing with them

The issue that I’m dealing with is that I have friend at church who can’t read a small paragraph’s. I try to helping him. I’m not good too, but tried to help him. I had the same problem and I’ try reading small pages.

Another issue is that teenagers want to have kids in the age of 15.I asked them why some of you want kids? She says,” We want to enjoy life.” I said it’s not time to enjoy life it’s time to enjoy school and your books. I say everyday try reading your book and doing your homework and you will see what I am talking about.

With this festival, I want to attract more tourists to the region and therefore bring more money to the locals. Anothr positive side effect of the festival is, that we can promote smaller local artists and go swimming in the bay at the same time.

Observations - Rory Usher

I attended the Awarenet sessions held at C.M Vellem school on two occasions and interacted with a class of approximately 20 students between the ages of 14 and 15. Despite the numerous challenges that this community faces economically, like many others in this country, the main area of concern at the school was the lack of literacy and specifically that of technological literacy. My chief involvement in these Awarenet sessions at C.M Vellem, apart from my photographic duties, was to help the children in solidifying their grasp of using the Awarenet software as well as helping them in aspects such as spelling and grammar.

I found that the main issues that children faced with gaining traction with the technology was a combination of a lack of familiarity with the software coupled with grammatical issues. On both occasions the children were asked to write blog posts either based on a personal experience of theirs or from a picture of a specific person or topic given to them by the coordinator Terri-Lynn Penney. As a single coordinator it was evident that Terri-Lynn was at times overwhelmed by the number of requests regarding grammar and so it became starkly clear that some form of voluntary participation programme would be highly useful as it would allow more children to be helped more frequently.

The availability of internet access continues to plague many of the schools in which Awarenet projects have been installed and this was evident at C.M Vellem on my final day of observation as the internet was temporarily down and so Terri-Lynn was unable to connect the kids to the web in order to perform research. These are not technological aspects that are insurmountable but reflect a growing need to address technological innovation both in the educational sphere and on a more macro, national level.

The lack of internet activity on this day also nullified one of the main tenets of the Awarenet project which is a heightened level of social interaction. Due to the lack of internet access the children who had written blog posts were unable to post them to the web immediately and this severely limits the social potential of the use of Awarenet at C.M Vellem. This lack of connectivity highlights the gap that is widening at an extreme rate in this country between the privileged with access to the internet, for whom it is taken for granted, and those who are neglected due to lack of economic strength.

PEER PRESSURE

I belive that there is peer pressure torwards your friends most of the time.Peer pressure is a person forces you to do something ,most specially your best friend, because he/she knows everything about you at a moment and he/she tries to control your life while you have to wokrk together.I believe that ,there is nothing as peer presure ,because a person would'nt force you to do something while you are best friends. There is a deep peer presure were a person forces you go somewhere ,and then that will be a time he/she forces you to do so,as a tricck that is being planned.

What banti littering means to me!

This picture means alot to me becuase it say's that pick it up or pay it out.

People are throwing papers in the streets when the bins are full and thats a litter. The municipality must tidy up the bins so that people can throw the papers.Becuase when the bins are full people throw the papers in the streets so that cuase a desease to the people in the community some people are throwing their dead dogs and they are not even diging for them.that rubbish is going through the drains and even in the dams and that kills the animals under the water and thats a water pollution.
