Community Engagement Week
Held by the Rhodes University, the Community
Engagement Week ran from the 5th
to the 9th
of May in Grahamstown. A colourful programme consisting of education
activities, youth dialogues, development workshops and panel
discussions was provided to the visitors.
All departments and student organizations involved in
Community Engagement initiatives, as well as community partners set
up exhibition displays in Eden Grove.
The Village Scribe Association in cooperation with
the Rhodes University Department of Music and Musicology presented
the ‘awarenet Peace Day project’, one of the biggest projects of
the awarenet programme.
More than 50 awarenet learners from 5 schools
participated in this project and created their own songs for
international Peace One Day. Corinne Cooper, Lunga Heleni and Zukani
Budaza trained the learners aged between 12 to 15 in song writing and
song composition for 7 weeks. They presented one song per school at
the Peace Day concert in front of 400 visitors in September 2013.
Finally learners from Ntaba Maria School won the first prize for the
best song and received their own music video shot. Furthermore all
the songs in the competition were recorded by Corinne Cooper who will
also produce the CDs at the Rhodes recording studio.
After the CE Week had been officially opened on
Monday, every department and organization presented their projects on
the following day. Terri-Lynn Penney (Village Scribe Association) and
Corinne Cooper (Rhodes University Dept of Music and Musicology) were
introducing the awarenet project to the audience. Visitors were able
to listen to all the songs while watching the music video and several
slideshows which showed the whole process of the project.

Science Festival Africa 2014
Village Scribe Association and eKhaya ICT members Terri-Lynn Penney,
Rieke Heitmueller, Antje Hering and Richard Strickland with help from
CM Vellem, Ntaba Maria and Victoria Girl's students presented the
awarenet programme at the Science Festival Africa 2014. Awarenet is a
new interactive education and communication platform for schools,
designed to create a safe environment where student communities at
schools across the country can interact.
The Scifest took place
at the National Settlers Monument in Grahamstown from the 12th of
March to the 18th of March. Companies and organizations from all over
South Africa and Germany introduced their work to the visitors
according to this year's topic “Into the space”. Local schools as
well as other schools from the Eastern Cape like Port Elizabeth, East
London and Mthatha visited the Scifest and took part in certain
workshops.
The Village Scribe Association presented the awarenet programme which
is improved with a new password function from Friday to Monday. On
the one hand we introduced KaLite which is now integrated into the
social learning network awarenet. KaLite is an offline version of the
KhanAcademy who created educational videos and exercises.
On the other hand we presented our project “About personal and
public space” which we worked on with our students from local
schools like CM Vellem, Ntaba Maria and Good Shepherd for about 6
weeks. It deals with the topic safety & privacy in the internet,
privacy in general and the conflict between safety & privacy. The
learners had to write blogs, answer forum questions, interpret a
cartoon and create posters and photo stories during the project.
As part of the awarenet programme we also showed awarenet Peace Day
music videos, the latest video clip of the awarenet Peace Day concert
and a slideshow with pictures of the last six month to get an
overview of our several projects.
The Scifest was a great success where we established contacts with
interested teachers, students and other organizations. At our first
time at the Scifest we had a lot of fun and met people from all over
South Africa which was really exciting.
