Dear Minister of
education
CONCERNS AND IMPACT
OF TEACHER SHORTAGE
As you are aware of
teacher shortage I need to bring to your attention how it affects us
as educators. I’m sure you are aware that we are dealing with
learners that have learning barriers, which need a lot of special
individual attention. Such learners cannot perform at the same pace
as other learners. This becomes very tricky for a teacher as we have
to deal with different levels in one class, with large numbers. As a
result we are unable to do justice to the learners. We don’t assess
them as we should and we are unable to help them master the necessary
skills as we should. To teach and be a remedial teacher at the same
time is not easy.
Learners don’t get
the necessary skills easily, especially with schools in the township
where there is a lot of illiteracy. Learners are solely dependent on
teachers for everything. (School work). Monitoring their work takes
too much time and a teacher is unable to reach every learner in the
class as we wish. Even moving around the classroom full of desks and
learners is a problem.
I humbly request that
the honourable minister help us in this regard because it dampens the
spirit of teachers, and takes away the dignity and confidence of the
educator to the job efficiently and effectively.
I hope this letter will
receive the attention it deserves
Thank you
Yours in education
N.G. Frans
