Spider at the VSA!

Strix and I are used to working with spiders -- Internet spiders.  These are automatic programmes that can crawl through entire websites downloading millions of pages. Google uses them too!

So we were quite surprised to have to deal with an entirely different kind of spider in our offices. Fortunately, Strix was once again master of the situation. The bird spider mother with her eggs was brought to a safe outdoor destination...

New awareNet Colours

awareNet's new colours are based on those of the new Logo!

imageexpanded|raUID=535800080932179219|size=width300|
Most of you have already seen the new logo through your use of awareNet. Now awareNet is changing it's styles to match the upbeat pace set by the logo. We have waited over 18 months to move awareNet from a neutral grey-ish coloured service to this eye-catching style.

I won't say anything about why we chose these colours in this blog - we would very much like to first hear what you think of it!

Please complete our poll about the new colour scheme.

Calling all Determined Youth of South Africa!

width300|"

Being young and poor in South Africa (and anywhere else) is tough. I count myself lucky not to have been there. And yet many of the most amazing people I know have been there - to varying degrees.

Avoiding the pitfalls of drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, malnutrition and  giving in to blinkered teachers in a corrupt and dysfunctional education system, some of my companions and friends have stepped over their past. They have become beacons of hope for their family circles. Like Madiba they kept faith and integrity in the darkest hour.

They gave everything for a good education and developed a positive attitude -- doors opened.

If you are such a young person, I want to meet you, hear your story and, hopefully, give you a job (or help in some way).

awareNet meeting, 12th Feb

The upshot of our discussion, was that awareNet has been built from the ground up for low-bandwidth, distributed functioning and that it would be difficult to reconcile these priorities with a globally functioning system like Elgg.

The minutes of the meeting are attached as a mindmap...  Enjoy!

These Bruises
We do not talk about them, these bruises: the ink stains on my fingers, or the marks she left on my neck.  You do not ask me about those photographs: the smiles that remember caresses, the averted-gaze-embraces.  But I wear them – the memories and the marks – and I think you know tha...

Clans names and their role in creating a positive self esteem.
I have observed with interest people's contributions on the history of their clan names on the projects wall. It is said that it is important for a person to know his or her own past in order to be able to make proper plans for his/her future. Knowing oneself contributes to a positive self esteem. A...
